Marine mammal bycatch reporting22 October 2021
Defra has announced that a mandatory measure for all wild-capture commercial fishers to report bycatch of marine mammals to the MMO is being brought in to ensure the UK can continue exporting wild-capture seafood to the US from 1st January 2023, as required by the US Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). The information is to feed into UK bycatch monitoring programmes to improve understanding of where and what bycatch occurs.
Man overboard awareness training dates for the fishing industry19 October 2021
A programme of training courses has restarted to make fishermen more aware of the perils of man overboard incidents. Funded events in environmental training pools across the UK aim to highlight the dangers of falling overboard fishing vessels.

D&S IFCA is inviting views on the development of a Size of Vessels Byelaw that will replace the existing Size of Vessels Byelaw that was introduced by Devon Sea Fisheries in 1996. Input may assist D&S IFCA’s Byelaw and Permitting Sub-Committee in their decision making and influence the content of the Byelaw. The Size of Vessels Byelaw will apply to all commercial fishing vessels that are registered (Port letters and Numbers) and have a valid fishing licence.
