Following on from the ‘settling of the dust’ regarding the requirement for fishermen to have a certificate of medical fitness, we have been working with the MCA to make the current situation easier to understand.

Marine mammal bycatch reporting

Defra has announced that a mandatory measure for all wild-capture commercial fishers to report bycatch of marine mammals to the MMO is being brought in to ensure the UK can continue exporting wild-capture seafood to the US from 1st January 2023, as required by the US Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). The information is to feed into UK bycatch monitoring programmes to improve understanding of where and what bycatch occurs.
