At the latest NFFO South West Committee meeting, the Shark Trust gave strong backing to the efforts of NFFO member the North Devon Fishermen’s Association (NDFA) to sustainably manage rays in the Bristol Channel.
The second round of EU Norway talks for a reciprocal agreement in 2009 concluded on Friday 28th without a settlement.

The Demersal Working Group of the North Sea Regional Advisory Council met recently in a committee room of the European Parliament in Brussels, to deal with a heavy workload that included discussions on the designation of the Dogger Bank as a marine protected area.

The NFFO met the Board of Natural England recently to discuss the Marine Bill and how Natural England would approach its task of selecting and designating a network of marine conservation zones around the UK.
The annual EU Norway talks are a complex set of negotiations over two rounds that, amongst other tasks, set the TACs for shared stocks like North Sea cod, haddock, saithe, plaice and whiting.
The NFFO will shortly provide its annual briefing for MPs in advance of the annual fisheries debate in Parliament and the December Council of Ministers.

As NFFO News went to press the NFFO was due to meet the new Fisheries Minister Huw Irricana-Davies for urgent talks mainly focused on the December Council. The ministerial reshuffle, along with changes amongst Defra’s senior officials has led to concerns over the lack of experience in the UK negotiating team.

New Fisheries Minister, Huw Irranca-Davies, met with the two UK Federations, NFFO and SFF, barely a week after taking office, to discuss priorities and preparations for the December Council of Ministers meeting that, along with the EU/Norway negotiations, will make crucial decisions on fishing opportunities for 2008.
