The recent conclusion of the long-running court case about fish landings in Newlyn, has brought the use the Serious Organised Crime Agency, for fisheries offences, into the spotlight.
In an overview given to a major consultative meeting on the Scientific Advice on European fish stocks, held recently in Brussels, a senior ICES scientist stated that most European fish stocks can be categorised as being broadly stable.

Under the Westminster Marine Bill and the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the government is legally committing itself to delivering a network of marine protected areas.
The recent spate of superficial and sensationalist stories appearing in the media has provoked the Federation into preparing a starter kit for journalists too lazy to make the effort to understand the fishing industry.
At its recent meeting in Paris the North West Waters Regional Council adopted the NFFO’s proposals for a new approach to fisheries science in the Irish Sea.
