TACs and Effort Move in Opposite Directions

After two days of negotiations in Brussels, the conclusion of the EU’s Fisheries Council in the early hours of Saturday morning has left Northern Ireland’s fishermen feeling deflated.
The UK, with strong support from France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands and Denmark, managed to overturn the Commission’s perverse interpretation of the Article 13 effort buyback provisions which, if implemented, would have left the main whitefish and nephrops fleets with only a few weeks fishing in 2012.

The first round of negotiations towards the annual fisheries agreement between the EU and Norway was held recently in Brussels.
A constructive meeting with the representatives from the Marine Management Organisation was held in the NFFO offices recently to discuss the arrival of marine spatial planning and in particular, the first two draft marine plans.

The MPA Fishing Coalition has welcomed UK Fisheries Minister, Richard Benyon’s announcement that further time will be allowed to designate a network of marine conservation zones in UK waters, to allow additional time to collect evidence on their location and boundaries.
