December Council: Channel Cod

Channel cod is a very important stock for a wide number of fleets. Given that the French hold 78% of the quota it is natural that France takes the lead in this stock.  A scientific paper supporting the case for an increase was submitted to the Commission but it was still not possible to secure a roll over and there will be a 10% cut in 2008. There may be scope to reverse this highly unwelcome reduction during the year through a review clause that has been inserted into the text.
